April Knight, known to readers worldwide by her Native-American name Crying Wind passed away aged 83. She was a beloved author, artist, columnist, mother and speaker. At age thirteen she was a published author, and before eighteen she had sold more than fifty short stories. She went on to publish more than 1,000 stories and articles in her career and wrote a monthly column for Intertribal Life Newspaper from 1995 right up to her passing.

April’s popular Crying Wind book series captivated audiences with its vivid portrayal of a young Native American girl navigating the complexities of identity, reservation life, and ultimately, a transformative encounter with the Christian faith. It earned worldwide recognition, numerous literary awards and was translated into fifteen languages. She spent decades speaking at conferences, churches, and community gatherings, sharing her testimony.

She loved horseback riding, beachcombing, stormy seas, world travel, poetry, and spoiling her grandchildren. April is survived by her children, grandchildren, and countless readers whose lives she touched through her words.
